The Institute's totally computerized library caters to the academic and research needs of the faculty, staff, research scholars, trainees and students of the Institute through subscription to prime e-journal packages: IEL Online, ACM Digital Library and INFORMS Management Journals. Through these subscriptions, library users have full text access to more than 3 million research articles including journal and conference papers. The library also subscribes to BankInfoSecurity published by Information Security Media Group (ISMG) that provides access to latest news, blogs, interviews, white papers, webinars, etc. in the area of banking technology with a focus on security. The requirement for articles beyond these packages is met through purchase on pay-per-view basis.

The library also maintains an exhaustive collection of books along with over 150 periodical titles in print, 120 email-based newsletters, and a selective collection of video cassettes, Computer Based Training (CBTs), lectures by faculty of IITs on CDs/DVDs, photo albums and other materials (both in print and electronic media). Library users have access to full text archives of most of the print journals. The Institute conducts a number of Executive Development Programmes and the course material is also made available in the library in print/digital form.

An additional 300+ journals/magazines that are available free on the net and reflect the mandate of IDRBT have been identified and their URLs are integrated with the library catalogue.

Development of a Selective Collection of Literature

The library collection, which is being continuously augmented and updated, reflects the mandate of the Institute. The major subject areas include Financial Network and Application Architecture; Electronic Payment Systems and Security Technology; Biometrics; Electronic Commerce and eCRM; Multimedia, Internet Technologies and Web Based Training; Data Mining, Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence; Knowledge Management and Technology Management; ALM and Risk Management; Banking and Finance; and Banking Law and Legislation.

The Acquisition includes both conventional and non-conventional documents. Library has registered with most of the publishers for advance intimations on release of new titles in the above subject areas which helps in identifying and procuring relevant titles on time.

Development of a Digital Library

To keep the library users up-to-date with the developments and trends in the area of banking technology and related aspects a daily full-text bulletin, with latest news and features selected from newspapers, e-mail newsletters and Google Alerts, is compiled and posted on the Institute's Intranet. All the documents in the daily bulletins are achieved and indexed through Greenstone Digital Library package and made available 24x7 in a virtualized environment. The library keeps news and features archives since 2005 with more than 90,000 documents indexed. The software allows searching the archives by title, file name and words/phrases in the document text. Boolean search is also supported by the software.

A query on the WebOPAC retrieves a list of books and other materials available in the Library in print or electronic form along with a list of resources on the Internet.

Koha Implementation

The IDRBT Library has implemented Koha 3.12, an open source Integrated Library Management System (ILMS) as part of migrating from legacy Oracle-based TLMS application. All the modules are tested and the library activities including Acquisitions, Circulation, Serials Control, etc., are now managed on Koha.

The OPAC was customised to suit the requirements of the library users. A "New Arrivals in the Library" window was added. Additional triggers were also added under "More Searches" option of Koha that automatically picks up keywords from the displayed titles and search in IEEE, ACM and INFORMS Pub. Suite (all subscribed by IDRBT) and Amazon (US/UK) to provide results in the order of relevance, from the respective databases/portals.

The focus of the IDRBT Library is on keeping the user community up-to-date with latest trends and advancements in the area of banking technology through:

  • Acquisition of all types of documents, documentation and document delivery
  • Search the in-house database and other CD-ROM databases to answer specific queries
  • Provide literature search and SDI (Selective Dissemination of Information) services
  • Identify and subscribe important e-mail/Internet-based journals/newsletters
  • Surf the Internet to download relevant reports and papers on demand or in anticipation
  • Correspond with the researchers worldwide for specific publications, if the same are not available on pay-per-view basis
  • Compile and post a daily bulletin with latest news and features.

All the activities of the library are automated by implementing the Total Library Management System (TLMS). Users have easy and instant access to the bibliographic details of the library resources through the Web based Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) module provided by TLMS.

All the staff members of the Institute are provided membership of the Library. Temporary membership facility is extended to trainees and workshop participants for a limited period. Issue privileges of users vary based on the member groups to which they belong. e.g Faculty/Research Fellows/Administrative Staff/Students.
