The Institute has been offering a Ph.D programme in collaboration with the University of Hyderabad (A Central University) since 1999. The NAAC has awarded "A" Grade with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.89 on 4.0 scale to the University.
IDRBT has been recently granted Associate Institution Status by the University of Hyderabad for undertaking research independently at IDRBT for the award of Ph.D. Degree in the areas of Computer Sciences and Information Technology.
The Associate Institution status enables the Institute to enroll Ph.D. students to carry out research and development in various areas of Banking Technology. While the Research Fellows carry out their research at the IDRBT, the Ph.D degree is awarded by the University of Hyderabad.
The Research Fellows of IDRBT are expected to work on research projects related to Banking Technology, specifically in the Institute's focal areas of:
- Financial Networks and Applications;
- Electronic Payments and Settlement Systems
- Security Technologies for the Financial Sector
- Financial Information Systems and Business Intelligence.
The Ph.D programme is offered only on a full-time basis and accordingly, Ph.D Scholars are expected to be at IDRBT during the entire tenure of their Ph.D and carry out the research on a full-time basis. Employees of Banks and Financial Institutions and working professionals too need to pursue the Ph.D on a full-time basis.
Essential Qualifications for admission to Ph.D Programme:
Masters Degree in any Engineering / Technology; OR M.Phil. in Mathematics OR Statistics OR Electronics OR B.E / B.Tech. OR Masters Degree in Computer Applications / Mathematics/ Statistics/ Electronics/ Information Systems/ Internet Technology/ Geoinformatics/ Bio-informatics with a minimum of 60% marks in the above stated qualifications. (a relaxation of 5% marks is provided to SC/ST candidates).
All educational qualifications must have been obtained from recognized universities/ institutions in India or abroad. If grades are awarded instead of marks, candidates should clearly indicate their numerical equivalent.
Specialisation
In addition, candidates should have a keen interest to work in any of the various areas of Banking Technology such as Information Technology in Banking; Financial Networks and Applications; Electronic Payments and Settlement Systems; Security Technologies for the Financial Sector; Financial Information Systems and Business Intelligence; Financial Inclusion Technologies; Core Banking System, Alternate Delivery Channels; Open Source Technologies; Information Security; and closely related areas.
Selection Process:
Candidates fulfilling the criteria prescribed above may respond to the Institute's advertisement for the Ph.D programme in various national newspapers or can also apply through this website. The selection process for admission to the Ph.D programme would consist of: i) a written examination and ii)Personal Interview (only for the candidates qualifying the written examination). The Institute would conduct its own entrance test in Hyderabad for the shortlisted candidates.
Annual Intake:
Upto Eight (General - 04; OBC - 02, SC - 01, ST - 01).
Fellowship:
IDRBT provides monthly fellowship of Rs. 14,000/- in the first & second year and Rs.15,000/- in the third year. The Fellowship is provided only if the scholar is not receiving funding from any other source.
Funding for Conferences:
The Institute offers partial funding to scholars to attend One International Seminar/Conference/Workshop if a research paper of the scholar is accepted during the tenure of the fellowship. The Institute also funds attending one national Seminar/Conference/Workshop every year.
Accomodation:
IDRBT provides accommodation to the Ph.D Scholars in the Institute's Quarters at Begumpet at nominal cost.
Cafeteria:
Ph.D Fellows will also be provided lunch and cafeteria facility during the office hours of IDRBT.
How to Apply
Interested candidates are invited to apply for Ph.D the Programme. The application should contain proposal of the proposed research in not over 1500 words along with the curriculum vitae and duly-filled application form.

Candidates belonging to SC/ST category should submit along with the application a scanned copy of the certificate of their caste / tribe from a Revenue Officer not below the rank of Tahsildar / Mandal Revenue Officer. Further, SC/ST candidates belonging to the state of Andhra Pradesh should submit an Integrated Community Certificate issued by the Competent Revenue Authority. Candiadtes claiming reservation under the OBC category must enclose an attested copy of the OBC (non-creamy layer) certificate issued by a competent authority without which their claim will not be considered under OBC category. The short listed candidates will be called for the written test.
